The Ultimate Masai Mara Fee Guide: Avoid These Costly Gate Surprises

3 min read

Planning an unforgettable safari to the Masai Mara National Reserve? Before you pack your bags, there is a major shift in park entry rules you need to know about. Gone are the days of flat $70 to $80 fees—Narok County has implemented a strict seasonal pricing model.

1. The Official Reserve Fee Structure

Your daily per-person entry fee depends directly on your residency status and the time of year you travel:

Visitor Category

Low Season (Jan 1 – June 30)

Peak Season (July 1 – Dec 31)

Non-Resident Adult

USD 100 / day

USD 200 / day

Non-Resident Child (Ages 9–17)

USD 50 / day

USD 50 / day

East African Resident Adult

KES 2,500 / day

KES 5,000 / day

Kenyan Citizen Adult

KES 1,500 / day

KES 3,000 / day

  • The Little Explorers: Children aged 8 and under enter entirely free.

  • ID Requirements: Kenyan citizens must carry a valid National ID. East African residents (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan) must present a valid passport with a resident visa or work permit.

2. Hidden Costs: Vehicles & Camping

Your entry ticket is only part of the equation. Make sure to account for transport and accommodation fees:

Vehicle Entry Fees (Daily Flat Rate)

  • Private Cars (< 6 seats): KES 1,000 per day

  • Safari Vans & 4x4 Land Cruisers: KES 1,500 per day

Camping Surcharges (Nightly)

Opting for a tent instead of a luxury lodge? Add these nightly camping fees:

  • Public Campsites: USD 30 per night (non-residents) / KES 1,000 (citizens)

  • Private Campsites: USD 40 per night (non-residents) / KES 1,000 (citizens)

3. Three Critical Rules Every Traveler Must Know

The 12-Hour Rule (And the 10:00 AM Trap)

Tickets are no longer valid for a full 24 hours. They operate strictly on a 12-hour cycle (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Crucially, if you are departing by road on your final day, you must exit the gates by 10:00 AM—otherwise, you will be forced to pay for an entirely new day.

Where You Stay Doesn’t Lower the Fee

In the past, staying at a lodge inside the reserve sometimes offered fee breaks. Today, everyone pays the exact same reserve entry fee, whether you are pitching a budget tent outside the gate or staying at an ultra-luxury lodge inside.

Private Conservancies

The Ultimate Guide to Masai Mara Park Fees: How to Avoid Gate Surprises

Reserve vs. Mara Triangle vs. Conservancies

  • Masai Mara Reserve: Governed by Narok County; follows the standard $100 / $200 structure.

  • The Mara Triangle: The western section of the reserve. It uses the same pricing structure but operates as a strictly cashless zone (cards or pre-generated e-tickets only).

  • Private Conservancies: Areas like Mara North or Naboisho are community-owned borders with separate daily fees (usually $80 to $130), which are typically bundled straight into your nightly lodge rate.

Pro-Tip for Booking Your Trip

Always ask your safari operator for a fully itemized quote before paying. Ensure they clearly specify whether park entry fees, vehicle fees, and local taxes are included in your package or if you need to pay them directly at the Sekenani Gate.
